Program Profile

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) with Emphasis in School Executive Leadership

Educational Organization and Leadership

Program Description:

The School Executive Leadership Program is a cohort program offered by the Educational Administration and Leadership area of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Educational Organization and Leadership. The U of I Educational Administration and Leadership program has a long history of excellence and a strong reputation for leadership preparation. Currently, U.S. News and World Report ranks the program 14th out of over 500 educational leadership programs in the nation. Past graduates occupy positions of major responsibility in school district and educational organizations, as university professors, and in policy positions across the state of Illinois and the nation.

Begun in 1986, SELP brings together highly motivated and talented professionals from across the state, in a convenient delivery format to earn the Doctor of Education degree, along with Illinois Superintendent Endorsement. This approach allows working professionals to remain in professional practice while satisfying the residency requirement. SELP is designed for educators who hold Type 75 General Administrative Endorsement who desire positions as central office administrators and school superintendents.

Delivery Method:
 Face-to-face/Videoconferencing
Online
Self-paced/Asynchronous

Classes offered on:
Classroom instruction is held on weeknights and intensive weekends at the Multi-University Center at Oak Brook and on the U of I campus. Weekend classes meet Friday evenings from 5-9 pm and Saturdays from 8 AM–4 PM. In addition, students will be required to travel to the U of I campus for coursework in selected semesters. Some courses will be delivered through distance learning (videoconferencing, web-based courses, and blended delivery), enabling students to gain first-hand experience with different delivery modes while maintaining full-time employment. Students will progress through the coursework together in a highly specified program. No credit from other universities or from within the University of Illinois can be transferred into the program. Students will be expected to start together and remain together through the coursework. Students are responsible for their own travel, room, and meal expenses when completing on-campus study.
