Program Profile

NetMath Distance Education Program from the University of Illinois

Program Description:

NetMath students work in an interactive hands-on learning environment using Calculus&Mathematica, an award-winning courseware that makes it possible to do mathematical text, calculations, graphics and run programs in a single environment with the ease of a standard word processor. Students achieve a better conceptual understanding of the material while still gaining knowledge of the methods of problem-solving. When a student enrolls in a NetMath course, he or she is matched with a college student mentor who serves as a personal tutor, answers questions, and maintains contact with them as they progress through the course. Homework is submitted via an online course management system and is then graded by their mentor and returned to the student. Students also take online quizzes and written exams in-person with a local proctor. High school students use a teacher at their own school to administer exams and coordinate other details with the university. Adult learners are responsible for finding a local proctor that meets the NetMath proctor guidelines.

Delivery Method:
The Illinois NetMath distance education program offers online math courses for credit from the top-ranked and accredited University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Unlike most Internet-based math programs at other universities, this program is highly flexible making it ideal for high school students and adult learners. Since exams are done through local proctoring and quizzes and mentoring are done online, students never have to come to campus.

Term length:
Due to a recent policy review, NetMath courses will be available on a nine-month basis to students currently enrolled in high school. All other students will enroll in NetMath courses set up as 16-week offerings, with the option of obtaining three four-week extensions for a fee of $100 each.

Non-high school students submitting an enrollment request prior to 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 14, 2007, will be registered in 9-month sections. All non-high school students enrolling after 5:00 p.m. on September 14 will be registered in 16-week sections.

All students may finish in less than their established term (nine months or 16 weeks) if they wish. Students may enroll at any time for courses in both term lengths.

If enrolling in Math 230, students either need credit in NetMath 220 or an AB level AP score of 4 or higher. If enrolling in Math 242, the student needs credit in NetMath 230 or a BC level AP score of 4 or 5. (Available ACT or AP scores must be submitted with NetMath registration.)

- Adult Learners need to exhibit a background that supports the prerequisites for the NetMath course of their choice. There is no need for a placement test
