ONLINE Master of Science in Library and Information Science


Program Description:

The online LEEP Master of Science program equips individuals with the theories and practices of library and information science (LIS). Program objectives include: teaching graduates to anticipate and promote technological changes, fostering critical thinking about literature and research in LIS, and preparing for the evaluation and development of library services. Master’s students design their own program of study. Specializations include reference and information services, community information systems, design and evaluation of information systems, and services for children and young adults

Classes offered on: The LEEP distance education program brings students to campus for only brief periods of study each semester. Most classes require “live” Internet-based interaction at regularly scheduled times. Other class work can be completed per the student’s preferred time. Courses involve approximately 15–20 hours per week, including 10 hours of Internet time per week.

Credit options for courses within the program:
Degree seeking (admitted to a degree program) 
Non-degree seeking (students not admitted to a degree program at the time of the course) 
Non-credit/Audit

Number of Required Campus Visits: Master’s students enrolled via the LEEP option begin the program with a 10-day on-campus summer stay, during which they complete the two-hour required course “LIS 502: Libraries, Information, and Society” and a number of non-credit technology workshops.

Total Number of Credit Hours: 40

Tuition/Program Costs: LEEP students pay full tuition charges at the in-state or out-of-state rates, depending on where they reside, and they register through the Division of Academic Outreach. Tuition for students in the LEEP program is charged per 4 semester hours; for academic year 2007–08, it is $1628 for in-state tuition and $3212 for out-of-state + $164 Academic Outreach Fee.

Financial Aid: Student loans available for those accepted into degree program and enrolled at least 6 hours in Fall and Spring, or 3 hours in Summer

Admission Requirement(s):

  • A GPA of 3.0/4.0 for the junior and senior undergraduate years
  • Official transcripts
  • Letters of reference (3)
  • GRE test results
  • Note: GRE is required if GPA is less than 3.0/4.0 in last 2 years of undergraduate work.
  • 2 Essays
  • Resume

Application Deadline: Application deadline for LEEP admission is March 1 for first consideration. Applications will be accepted until the program is full.
