Program Profile

Certificate of Professional Development in Horticulture


Program Description:
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences is a broad and diverse department offering flexible courses off-campus. Students may enroll in individual courses for professional and/or academic advancement or pursue off-campus degrees.

Aligned with the M.S. in NRES, is a Certificate of Professional Development in Horticulture. Students who successfully complete three qualifying courses receive a Professional Development Certificate in Horticulture. A student must take one 500-level approved course, and two 400-level approved courses and receive a “B” or better in all courses to receive their certificate. A student taking courses toward a certificate and then decides to continue on for the M.S. degree in NRES can receive both the certificate and the degree. Courses may not be taken through the non-credit option to receive a certificate.

Potential career opportunities in the NRES and Horticulture fields can include work in the areas of Arboriculture, Arboretum Management, Environmental Communications, Conservatism, Cooperative Extension, Ecology, Environmental Consulting, Environmental Education, Forest Management, Forestry, Horticulture, Landscaping, Nurseries and Greenhouse Management, Plant Nutrition, Soil Science, Sustainable Development, Urban Ecology, Urban Forestry, and Turf Management.

Total Number of Credit Hours:  A student must take one 500-level approved course, and two 400-level approved courses and receive a “B” or better in all courses to receive their certificate. Actual hours vary between 10 and 12 depending on the course options selected by the student.

Tuition/Program Costs:  $320 per graduate credit hour

Admission Requirement(s): must have completed a four-year degree in an allied field of study to pursue the certificate or have approval from the department if bachelor’s degree is from a non-allied field of study.
