Master’s in Education (Ed.M.) with Emphasis in Global Studies in Education

Educational Policy Studies

Program Description:

Global Studies in Education (GSE) is an online masters program, designed for educators who are seeking to understand the ways in which global processes are affecting their work. From a range of perspectives, this two-year part-time program offers P-16 educators an opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and resources to critically understand the changing role of education in an increasingly globalized world, and to incorporate this understanding in their curriculum and practices.

  • Consists of 8 semester courses, taught over two years by leading scholars in the field of global studies in education.
  • Explores implications of global interconnectivity for such educational issues as curriculum, pedagogy, technology, policy, governance and culture.
  • Utilizes some of the latest developments in on-line teaching.
  • Provides students with an option of participating in a summer study tour, as well as carrying out a school-based project.

Tuition/Program Costs: To enable access to educators around the world, the cost of the program has been kept to a minimum of $1208 per course as of 2007.

Admission Requirement(s): To complete the GSE application, please follow the following steps:

1) Complete Online Application ( recommended ) for Admission to the Graduate College. The application is located at: www.grad.uiuc.edu/admissions/apply/program.htm

Please include the following information on the Graduate College Application:

Proposed Program: Educational Policy Studies
Degree: Educational Policy Studies (Online)-- EDM
Field(s) of Specialization: Global Studies in Education
Desired Term of Enrollment: Fall 2008
Under the Test Information section - GRE is not required, so it is alright to leave this blank.

We encourage online applications because it saves time and paper. When you apply online you create an ID and PIN, which enables you to check your application status after submitting your application.

2) Pay application fee ($50 for domestic students, $60 for international).

3) Send official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate studies, issued by the institutions and sealed in original envelopes to Global Studies in Education. Have the transcripts sent to the following address:

4) Ask three (3) people to send letters of reference, preferably from persons who can speak about your scholarly potential, by uploading them to the university application as instructed in the application.

5) For International Applicants: in addition to the above materials, you will need to submit TOEFL scores as well. The minimum score for the Department of Educational Policy Studies is 617. You will not need to submit a financial statement nor will you need a visa. You can skip those parts of the application. Admission to an online program does not allow you student-visa status.
