Program Profile

Master's of Education (Ed. M.) with emphasis in Diversity and Equity Issues in Education

Educational Policy Studies

Program Description:

This unique online program aims at providing educators with a holistic approach to issues related to diversity and equity in P-16 learning environments; it will develop teachers and administrators who are knowledgeable in learning theories, leadership in diverse environments, disability, race, gender and sexual orientation issues, and issues of social class and poverty.

Participants will learn how to address the need to create a learning environment in which all learners feel safe, have opportunities to freely engage in the pursuit of knowledge, and are motivated to learn.

A foundation of learning theories, best practice models, and innovative learning techniques for addressing the diverse learner will be provided.

Target audience:
A wide audience base of P-16 educators, educational administrators, and policy makers who are charged with or interested in creating inclusive learning environments in which the diverse needs of students are met. The program is open to all qualified applicants, irrespective of field of specialization or location.

Program duration:
2 years; 8 courses plus a capstone project. Each course is 10 weeks in length. Courses include:

  • Introduction to Diversity and Equity Issues in Education
  • Historical and Social Barriers In Education
  • Advanced Seminar: Leadership for Diversity
  • Psychology of Learning in Education
  • Equity Issues in Special Education
  • Advanced Graduate Seminar: Curriculum and Pedagogical Implications for Teaching Diverse Students
  • Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation Issues
  • Advanced Graduate Seminar on Education and Stratification
  • Capstone: Innovative Projects/Research Methods

Tuition/Program Costs:  The current tuition rate for each 4-hour course is $1,816 (USD) and $908 for the 2-hour capstone course. This rate includes both tuition and fees. Reading materials are not included in these fees. The tuition rate is the same for in-state, out-of-state, and international students. The cost for future courses may be subject to moderate changes in accordance with the actions of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

Financial Aid is available in the form of

  • A minimum of 1 scholarship per cohort/per program

Admission Requirement(s):

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • For full admission to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Graduate College: A minimum GPA of 3.0 on the 4.0 scale for the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework and for all graduate coursework
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Résumé and a personal information and experience statement that demonstrates the connection between future career goals and the Ed. M. in Diversity and Equity Issues in Education.

International applicants will be required to submit additional materials, in accordance with Graduate College policies. For full consideration, all application materials must be received by June 1, 2008. Late applications will be considered if spaces remain in the cohort.
