Master of Computer Science (MCS)


Program Description:

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a leader in information technology, offers its Master of Computer Science (MCS) degree entirely online with no required campus visits. All students view the same lectures, and complete the same class assignments, exams, and projects as on-campus students. The degree earned through the online program is the same top-ranked degree awarded to on-campus students.

Admission Requirement(s):
- Applicants must have been awarded (or about to be awarded) a 4-year bachelors degree equivalent to that granted by the University of Illinois.
- GPA for the last 45–60 semester-hours (junior and senior years) of undergraduate study must correspond to a "B" or 3.0/4.0 or higher. If an applicant also holds a graduate degree, the GPA for that degree must also be at least a "B". This represents the minimum GPA required by the Graduate College of this university. Please note the average GPA of those applicants recommended for admission by the department is much higher than 3.0/4.0.
- Statement of purpose
- Official copies of transcripts for all completed university coursework
- Certification of degree for all completed degree programs (international students)
- Three letters of reference
- TOEFL exam scores (if applicable)

Applicants to the online program must have sufficient background in computer programming, algorithms and data structures, computer organization, and theory of computation (comparable to CS 125, CS 225, CS 231/232, and CS 173/273 at UIUC).

Individuals do not have to be admitted to a degree program in order to enroll in an online course. Only 12 credit hours of coursework completed prior to being admitted to the degree program can be transferred into the program.
