Teaching at an off-campus site

Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Academic Outreach provides various services for faculty who teach at off-campus sites, as well as for those who teach using distance learning technologies (including online).

The following list outlines the types of support provided:

  • Mileage reimbursement: Faculty members who need to travel to an off-campus site to teach a class will be reimbursed for all travel expenses. If driving, they may use a car from the University carpool OR they may drive their own vehicles and be reimbursed for mileage at the University rate. If they choose to use a vehicle from the University carpool, their home academic department is responsible for reserving the vehicle and may contact Academic Outreach for a FOAPAL for billing purposes. If they choose to use their own vehicles to travel to/from an off-campus site-based teaching assignment, they would need to let Academic Outreach know how many trips to and from the site would need to be made. Academic Outreach will then provide mileage reimbursement. Academic Outreach will also provide reimbursement for an alternative reasonable method of travel, such as the train.
  • Travel dislocation: Also known as Site Allowance (this is noted on the course sheet submitted by academic units), travel dislocation at the rate of $0.40/mile traveled from campus to the off-campus teaching site will also be provided, unless noted otherwise by the home department.
  • Instructional facilities: Academic Outreach will pay for any expenses involved with space and resources for the off-site class.
  • Instructional design and delivery: Any expenses incurred because of the incorporation of Web-based enhancements in the site-based course (at the discretion of the instructor) will also be paid by Academic Outreach, which will also provide any additional resources such as a laptop, projector, etc.
  • Meals: Faculty will be reimbursed per diem for meals, during the course of their travel to a site to teach an off-campus course, per standard state guidelines.
  • Lodging: If faculty members need to stay overnight at the site while teaching an off-campus course, they will be reimbursed for lodging expenses at the state rate; in certain circumstances, Academic Outreach might be able to request an exception if the lodging rate exceeds the state rate.
  • Other services: Textbook ordering and library services are also available.
