Celebrate the Return of Spring! • Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1, 2007

This two-day event celebrates the return of spring while exploring all that Allerton has to offer. There is sure to be something for everyone with a variety of activities and events planned throughout the Park. Highlights include: daily spring brunches, egg hunts, pictures with our spring bunny, the Spring Showcase, and the Spring Swing Formal Dinner and Dance.

Many thanks to the Decatur Audubon Society for their help in sponsoring this event. All proceeds benefit Allerton Park and its many programs and offerings. Thank you for your support!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

  • Early Morning Bird Walk: Both days at 9 AM, VC
    Bring your binoculars and join Allerton staff for a hike through the trails looking for migrating spring birds. Program sponsored by the Decatur Audubon Society.
  • Gift Shop Sale: Both days from 9 AM–5 PM, VC
    Stop by the Allerton Gift Shop for specials on Allerton, nature, and garden-related items.
  • Spring Showcase: Both days from 10 AM–4 PM, RC
    Explore the Allerton Mansion while visiting local businesses and vendors showcasing new spring arts, crafts, and merchandise. Plus, enjoy the Spring Sweets Room in the Library featuring some of the sweetest chocolates, cakes, and candies in the area!

  • Food Sales: Saturday from 10 AM–4 PM and Sunday from 1–4 PM, VC
    A variety of food, drinks, and snacks will be available for purchase in the Visitor Center and Park.
  • Parents’ Room: Saturday from 10 AM–4 PM and Sunday from 1–4 PM, VC
    Visit the Parent’s Room to shop for fun gifts just for the kids (perfect basket fillers!). All proceeds from these sales benefit Allerton’s education program. 
  • Children’s Games and Activities: Saturday from 10 AM–4 PM and Sunday from
    1–4 PM, VC
    Enjoy face painting, temporary tattoos, and a variety of games and crafts.
  • Pictures with Our Spring Bunny: Saturday from 10 AM–4:30 PM and Sunday from
    1–4:30 PM (breaks throughout), VC
    Have your picture taken with our “Spring Bunny” (costumed character) and receive a 4 X 6 photo in a photo holder to take home. $3.50 per picture or $6 for two copies (same pose).
  • Heron Rookery Visit: Saturday only at 10:30 AM, Barn
    Natural History Survey Ornithologist Steve Bailey will lead a discussion of the life history of the herons of Illinois followed by a trip to the Great Blue Heron rookery in the Park to observe from a distance. Program sponsored by the Decatur Audubon Society. 
  • Spring Brunches: Both days at 11 AM and 2 PM, RC (reservations required)
    Adults $15.95, children 10 and under $5.95. Brunch fee includes Allerton Mansion Wristband. Call to make reservations, 217-333-3287.
  • Spring into Gardening Class: Both days at 1 PM, EC
    Sandy Mason (Saturday) and Jennifer Nelson (Sunday) from the University of Illinois Extension will provide general guidelines on how to prepare gardens for the growing season, what to prune when, seed starting, and more. 
  • Wildflower Hike: Both days at 2 PM, VC
    Hike the trails with Allerton staff to search for spring woodland wildflowers.
  • Egg Hunt in the Meadow: Both days at 2:30 PM, VC
    Children ages 2–10 are invited to bring their baskets to enjoy an egg hunt. Rain or shine, unless severe weather. Park Wristband price includes one egg hunt. Hunt will begin with 2 year-olds. Each age category will begin once the prior group has completed its hunt, approximately every 15 minutes. Separate hunt areas will be set up for: 2 year-olds (parents asked to accompany/assist children), 3 year-olds, 4–5 year-olds, 6–7 year-olds, and 8–10 year-olds.
  • Natural Egg Dyeing: Both days at 3 PM, VC
    Using materials from the garden, Allerton will host some egg dyeing fun. Eggs provided, limit 2 per person.
  • Native Plants in the Garden Class: Sunday only at 3 PM, EC (reservations required)
    Gardening with native plants is not only simpler, less expensive, and less labor-intensive in the long run, but it is also better for the environment! Janice Coons and Nancy Coutant of Eastern Illinois University will explain how to collect and handle native seeds and prepare them for gardens. Call 217-244-1035 to make reservations for this program.
  • Garden and Sculpture Hike: Both days at 4 PM, VC
    Allerton staff and volunteers will lead a guided tour of the formal gardens to explain the history of the Park, gardens, and sculpture found within. 
  • Stories and Stars: Saturday only from 7–8:30 PM, VC
    Join Allerton staff to learn the basics of astronomy along with myths and legends of the spring constellations. After dark we’ll head outside to search the skies. 
  • Spring Swing Formal Dinner and Dance: Saturday only from 7–11 PM, RC (reservations required)
    Welcome spring in style with a festive evening of fine food, drinks, and dancing. Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a gourmet four-course dinner will start the evening, followed by dancing to some of the best live swing and jazz music in the area. Be sure to wear your finest and join us to celebrate in true Robert Allerton tradition. Tickets are $65 per person and overnight accommodations may be available.   • Win a House in the Woods Getaway—Register at the ticket booth, Visitor Center, or the Allerton Retreat Center (Mansion) for a chance to win a weekend getaway for two at the House in the Woods. The package includes one night’s accommodations, dinner at the Mansion, and continental breakfast the following morning. One overnight stay for two will be awarded per day (March 31 and April 1). Winners will be notified by phone; some date restrictions may apply.
